The Tahoe Chamber Music Society is a (501c3) non-profit performing arts organization that has presented free chamber recitals to the Northern Nevada/Lake Tahoe region for 43 years. Aaron Paxson, former Artistic Director of the organization, made it his central focus to present six concerts every summer free of charge so that any who had interest could attend. Our current mission is to enrich the cultural landscape of Reno/Tahoe by hosting free chamber music recitals performed by the finest local and national talent, and cultivate sustainable audience growth through educational outreach. Since Aaron’s passing, the organization has increased the breadth of its programming to include family, jazz, and bluegrass concerts in an effort to reach a broader audience base. TCMS is unique in the Northern Nevada region in that it is one of the only summer festivals that creates opportunities for local mmusicians to perform alongside artists from all over the country. We feature professors from the University of Nevada, members of the Reno Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras, and established local ensembles like the Great Basin Brass and Tintabulations handbell choir. We have commissioned works to be premiered in our recitals which describe and celebrate various aspects of the Reno/Tahoe area. Our audience base is largely composed of elderly members of the community and younger students of music.
In the fall of 2016, TCMS brought specialists from New York and Colorado to Reno to conduct an intensive boot camp for cello students. Our participants met at Damonte Ranch High School for two days of classes, coachings, and rehearsals with the guest artists, and presented a concert for their families at the end of the second day. Twenty two students ranging from ages 11 to 60+ worked together to polish and perform their hour long program of cello ensembles in the concert. In the summer of 2017, we hosted master classes for local students given by the Associate Concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Justin Bruns, and Harpist Lynne Aspnes, former president of the American String Teachers Association.
This summer, Tahoe Chamber Music Society has programmed an entire concert highlighting the works of female composers, including a world premiere by local composer Monica Houghton. We will be hosting Yuki Numata-Resnick, a violinist who is co-founder of Buffalo String Works, who will be conducting a master class for Reno-Tahoe area students, and we will also be featuring a number of our most prestigious local musicians in our six concert series. We are also planning to conduct an orchestral skill workshop for local students who are preparing auditions for schools and local youth orchestras to be held in the 2018-2019 school year.
In order to bring these educational and performance goals to fruition in the current season, we rely on funding from the patronage of our audiences. We are currently seeking funds for our educational outreach program (master classes and workshops) for summer of 2018 and 19, and our six concert series which will be held in June-July of 2018. Every contribution helps and we cannot continue our mission without your support.
